When we shop for furniture, we look around the quality and durability of the furniture, but do we really know how to judge the quality? or what are the points that should be taken care before shopping furniture for home. Let’s discuss few of those points under furniture guide. There  are three important criteria to judge the furniture quality or to make a idea about its durability.

Quality Or Source Of The Wood Used For Making Furniture

If we talk about the source of wood there are again three kind of sources from where wood comes for making furniture from hardwood, which comes from trees like deciduous trees such as oak, maple, mahogany, teak, walnut, cherry and birch.  These woods are considered to be the best wood for making furniture as it is air dried and then kiln dried to remove all the moisture for better furniture.

Second, softwood which comes from trees like Coniferous trees such as pine, fir, redwood and cedar produce soft wood. Furniture is also constructed from these woods but they are more delicate and more prone to dents and scratches.

Third comes the modern Plywood, or engineered wood which is very commonly been used for making furniture’s these days.  There are many qualities in this section also and when high quality veneers are used, furniture is stronger and there is less chances of splitting or warping. So if we can identify the material used, we can very much judge the durability of our furniture’s.

Construction Of The Furniture

The way piece has been constructed tells enough about the durability of the piece. There are few points, we generally do not carefully examine before buying any furniture like:

  • Stapled joints can never be durable, so always avoid furniture with stapled joints.  Mortise and tenon, and dovetails are two of the oldest ways of putting together furniture, and also make for the strongest and best looking joints.
  • Furniture with the corner block is a good option as it provides more strength to the furniture.

  • Each and every detail should be neatly fixed up. Options for screwing the furniture with the wall for stability should always be there.

  • Doors will close neatly be flush with the cabinet front.

  • Balancing of the furniture should be checked, its level with the floor should also be checked.

Finish Provided To The Furniture

Again the stages are involved for best polishing of the furniture.  A quality finish involves sanding, staining, and finishing. Few things which should be checked before buying furniture are:

Any rough surface is a result of uneven sanding of the furniture, this can result in scratches and stains on the furniture very easily.

A very glossy or bubbled surface is a result of bad polishing being done on the piece of furniture.

High quality staining will be even, without any dark spots. If any dark spots seen on the furniture, don’t buy it.
